Lathyrus can be annuals or herbaceous or evergreen perennials, mostly climbing, with pinnate leaves ending in a tendril, and showy pea-like flowers, fragrant in some species.

Queen Alexandra is an annual variety, introduced in 1905 with scarlet flowers. Good for cutting.

Flowers: May to August, depending on when sown

Where to plant: Perfect for flower beds in the open or against a sunny wall; cottage gardens; courtyard gardens.
